Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Epping

A nest above a doorway or loading area is more than a nuisance for a business, because staff, customers and deliveries all pass beneath it, so a calm plan matters.

Why it matters more at a business

At home, a wasp nest affects a household that can choose to avoid a door or part of the garden. At a business, people come and go all day, and not all of them know about the problem. Customers walk under an entrance canopy. Staff carry stock through a rear door. Delivery drivers park beside the wall. A nest at the roofline above any of these puts a lot of people close to it, many of them unaware.

There is also the matter of reputation. A wasp swarm at the door of a café or shop is memorable for the wrong reasons. Dealing with a nest quickly, calmly and without fuss protects both people and trade.

Insurance and health and safety are other concerns for a business owner. Whether a policy covers pest treatment depends on its terms, and we cannot advise on it. What is certain is that reducing risk to the public by acting promptly is sensible.

Alarm is the other thing to avoid. A calm, practical approach, with clear signs and quiet redirection, keeps customers comfortable. There is no need for a notice to say anything dramatic: a simple "please use the other door" is enough.

Tracing the nest

Start the way you would at home, from the ground. Stand back from the building, in sunshine, and watch the fascia, the edge of the canopy or the rear eaves for a regular stream of wasps going into the same gap. Note the position by reference to something recognisable, such as a window, a sign bracket or a door.

If you manage more than one building or more than one unit in a block, say which one. A short written note and a few photos from a safe distance are enough.

Please do not allow staff to try to deal with it, or to stand on a chair, stepladder or trolley to look. Working at height near a nest is dangerous.

For larger premises, consider walking the building perimeter once a week during the summer. A short check of each elevation takes only a few minutes, and a nest found in May is a smaller problem than one found in August.

Protecting staff and customers

Take sensible, quiet steps while you wait for the visit. Redirect people to another door if you can, with a simple sign. Keep bins closed, particularly any for food waste. Ask staff not to prop the affected door open and to avoid standing beneath the entrance. If your premises serve food or drink outdoors, move the seating away.

Make sure everyone knows what to do if someone is stung. If anyone is stung, wash the area, scrape the sting out if it is still in the skin and use a cold pack. Dial 999 at once for swelling of the lips, face or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash. If a member of staff has a known allergy, tell us when you book.

Brief staff in a few words. Tell them where the nest is, which doors to avoid, who to ring and what to do if someone is stung. A short notice in the staff area is easier to follow than a conversation.

If deliveries arrive at the affected side, ask the driver to use another bay if possible, and make sure anyone collecting stock knows to move quietly and avoid the area beneath the entrance.

Arranging access

A technician can only act if they can reach the nest. Tell us who will meet them, whether any gates, shutters or locked areas need to be opened, and whether any equipment, vehicles or stock sit beneath the entrance. If the nest is on a roof that can only be reached from inside, the technician will need to be shown the route.

It helps to arrange a time when the area is quieter, if your business has a slower period. We offer same-day service and are open seven days a week, so this can often be arranged around your opening hours.

If the property is empty when the technician is due, say so and tell us who will provide access. Please give us a contact who can be reached on the day.

Treatment and records

The technician for Epping will treat the nest at its source, using suitable access equipment and protective clothing. The work is fully insured. The price is a fixed £90 for each nest, and that means one visit guaranteed, and each extra nest on the same property is £35 more. We work on commercial as well as domestic properties.

If you keep a maintenance log, note the date, the position and the action taken. When you ask about taking down the empty nest, the technician will tell you whether it can be reached.

After treatment, ask the technician to show you the entrance, and photograph it. The picture helps your maintenance contractor identify the exact gap that needs closing.

Where several traders share a building, tell the others, too, since a nest above a shared entrance concerns everyone.

Repairs and booking

Afterwards, make sure the entrance is repaired by your usual maintenance contractor or landlord, so the building is not used again. Whether you or a landlord is responsible depends on your lease, which you should check.

To arrange a visit, ring 01245 327274 or use the online booking form on the contact page.

Finally, plan for next year. Add the roofline to your annual building checks, ideally in late autumn. The same gap may attract wasps again if it is not closed, and businesses have more to lose from an unexpected nest in the busy summer months.

Frequently asked questions

Can a business book treatment the same way as a householder?
Yes. We treat nests at commercial and domestic properties on the same fixed price of £90 per nest.
Who pays if the building is leased?
That depends on the lease or tenancy agreement, so check it or ask your landlord or agent.
Do we need to close while the nest is treated?
The technician will advise on the day. Keeping people away from the affected area is the main point.
